Need Some Help With the Windows XP Blue Screen Error? 3 Steps to Fix it For Good

By B Matheson

This is quite possibly the most annoying error that exists on all PC's. Honestly it doesn't matter what version of Windows you're using, all of them have it, and this process isn't just for the Windows XP Blue Screen error. You can follow these steps to try and repair the issue on any version of Windows.

I'm going to outline 3 Steps you can take to try and stop the blue screen error from happening. After you've completed this article, and followed the steps you should have gotten rid of the error.

Step 1: Check your Registry

The Windows registry is where all important data is housed for most software programs, Windows itself, and hardware. The file can become corrupt, to large, or lose information needed to perform important tasks.

If this does occur, it can cause the blue screen error to occur. The average PC user likely won't have any idea what to do to repair these issues on their own. Thankfully there is registry repair software that will automate the process.

Start by downloading a free trial scan utility from either Registry Mechanic or Reg Cure. Both of these programs will scan your entire registry and let you know if you have any errors on your machine.

This saves you from spending any money before you know for sure if you have an issue or not.

Depending on the scan results you may want to pay for the registered edition to repair any items found. This is more often then not the cause of the Blue Screen error.

Step 2: Virus and Adware Scan

If you've completed step 1 and nothing seems to have changed then it's time to give this a try. Using your Virus and Adware scanner (if you have them, if not visit GriSoft for AVG Free and Lavasoft for AdAware Free).

These scans will take a bit longer then the registry cleaner scan but it scans every nook and cranny of your hard drive.

It's not often that a virus causes a Blue screen but it is possible. Scanning with these two pieces of software is something you should be doing once a week or month.

Step 3: Removal of Program and Re-Installation

If steps 1 and 2 haven't made any progress with the Windows XP blue screen error it's time for some more drastic measures.

For starters, make sure you have windows restore turned on and you have a current restore point set. This is out of the scope of this article but a must before going any further.

Once you've done this, take note if the blue screen is happening almost always while using the same program(s). If it is, and it most often does, head over to your control panel. We're going to remove and re-install the application(s) that is causing the blue screen.

Sometimes a corrupt or missing file for a certain program can cause this error to occur. If this is the case then there isn't any other fix then fixing that file or application. With most software this requires a complete install, and prior to installing it again you should remove it to avoid causing registry errors.

NOTE: Before you do this, ensure you do have the CD, DVD, or downloaded files available to install the program after you remove it.

This process should fix the error once and for all. If not the last chance is a system restore, or a big bill from a repair shop. Neither of these is appealing, but if I had to choose one I'd try restoring your system yourself. Just before you have everything that's important backed up prior to formating your hard drive and re-installing Windows and all software.
